MAHARASHTRA, India – A man in India killed 14 of his own family members and then committed suicide by hanging himself.
An article by NDTV published on March 6 said that Hasnain Warekar, the man who killed 14 of his relatives on February 28, had borrowed heavily from his relatives.
The police’s initial investigation also revealed that Warekar had possibly sexually abused one of his sisters who was mentally challenged.
The 35-year-old Warekar killed his wife, children, parents, three sisters and their children. One of his sisters, 22-year-old Subiya Barmar, survived the attack.
Barmar is the only witness to the horrifying massacre which took place at the Warekar family’s house in Kasarwadvali area, within the state of Maharashtra.
Barmar told the police that one of her dead sisters, Batul, had revealed that Warekar sexually abused her sometime in January.
Zee News India mentioned in an article published on March 5 that joint commissioner of police Ashutosh Dumbre revealed that Batul was mentally challenged and unmarried.
Police said the other sisters knew what happened which probably prompted Warekar to kill everybody.
During Warekar’s killing spree, Barmar had heard their mother pleading with Warekar not to kill her.
“I have given birth to you, please spare me,” the mother told Warekar before he killed her.
An article by Rohik Alok and Mohamed Thaver for The Indian Express published on March 3 said that Barmar locked herself in a room in an attempt to save herself.
Warekar told his sister that if she didn’t open the door, he would kill her infant child, which the brother went on to do.
Dumbre confirmed the report that Warekar, who had been jobless for the last two years, used to borrow money from his relatives and owed a total of 670,000 rupees (around $ 100,000).
Police also found some medicines for mental illness in the house and are looking into the possibility that Warekar suffered from “split personality” disorder.
