- Malaysian store’s general manager showed act of kindness towards shoplifter
- He offered the man a job after finding out about his circumstances
- He also gave him money and another offer to help his son finish his schooling
- Man explains he took the food because he was poor and his children were hungry
MALAYSIA— As proven by this kind-hearted general manager of a Malaysian supermarket, punishment is not always the solution to a crime.
According to Radzuan Ma’asan, general manager of a Tesco hypermarket in Bukit Mertajam, he decided to forego punishing the shoplifter who was caught trying to steal some foodstuffs from his store and instead offered him a job after finding out about his circumstances.
“The man’s situation really touched our hearts. We visited his relative’s house. It was so empty and poor,” The Star quoted him as saying. “He was not a regular thief. When we questioned him, he immediately confessed, saying that he stole the fruits and drinks because his son was hungry.”
“In my 23 years of experience in the retail line, I had never come across thieves who admitted their act so easily. Most would give all kinds of reasons. He also told us that he was unable to work as he has to look after his three children, aged two to seven,” he added. “So, we decided not to lodge a police report as this was a genuine case of extreme poverty.”
The man, who declined to be named, earlier explained to Radzuan he took the food because he had no money and his children were hungry. He said he had to quit his job to take care of his children and his wife who became comatose following a birth complication.
“I had quit my job as a contract worker after my wife fell into a coma during a birth complication last week. She is still warded at the Bukit Mertajam hospital,” he said, adding he was thankful to Radzuan for the second chance.
For his part, Radzuan — who also rendered financial assistance to the man — said he would also help him send his seven-year-old son to school.
“For now, our priority is to ensure that he enrolls his seven-year-old son in a school,” he said.
