- A Malaysian man sells off his Star Wars Lego collection to raise money for his wife’s cancer treatment
- He is selling his prized collection at a mall flea market every Sunday
- He remains thankful to some of his friends who reached out to help with financial contributions and with Lego items for him to auction
For this husband, nothing can be more precious than the life of his beloved wife; not even his prized Star Wars Lego collection.
Malaysian Mohamad Shahril Sabari, also known by his other name Victor Engku Shah, is sacrificing his hobby so he can raise money to pay for the treatment of his wife who is suffering from cancer.
His touching story was featured recently on The Star Online.
Victor is selling his prized possession at the Amcorp Mall flea market every Sunday. He has to travel everytime from Seremban to Petaling Jaya for his endeavor.
In an interview with The Star correspondent, Victor said he started collecting Star Wars Lego sets back in 2010.
Two weeks after he married his wife, Noor Azra Kamaruddin, in April 2015, the latter noticed a bump on her neck and went for a check-up at a clinic.
“The clinic referred her to a hospital for follow-up checks, and we went to KPJ Seremban where a CT scan was done,” he recalled. “The CT scan found a lump in her neck and a follow-up biopsy determined that she had lymphoma.”
In July last year, Noor got pregnant but their happiness was short-lived after the doctor advised his wife to have an abortion as she was already undergoing treatment that time.
“Doctors advised Noor Azra to have an abortion prior to chemotherapy as the risks were too great for her and the child. She went through the abortion with a very heavy heart and then began her chemotherapy,” he said.
Victor gave up his job as a finance officer to help his wife full time with the chemotherapy.
Without much resources, he began selling his collections to pay for Noor’s chemotherapy drugs which cost around RM 5,000 ($ 1,200) each dose, and she needs to undergo 12 sessions.
Aside from an estimated total cost of RM 60,000 for the whole treatment, Victor also needs to cover part of the insurance on top of the RM25,000 needed for the biopsy.
Nevertheless, Victor is still thankful to some of his friends who have reached out to help, as well as to the LBK Malaysia, Lego Auction Group MY and LCMLUG who shared some Lego items for him to sell in the auction.
In the midst of such a huge challenge, Victor finds consolation in knowing that there are a lot of good people around who have involved themselves in the struggle which he and his wife are presently facing, and amazingly, Lego has played a big part in making the treatment for his wife possible — truly, it’s a hobby that ‘pays’.
