MANILA, Philippines – Presidential candidate and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte skips a supposed meeting with doctors on Thursday after he suffered from migraine on the third day of the official campaign period.
JC Ansis said in his report for CNN Philippines published on February 12 that Duterte was just a few steps away from the ballroom of Crowne Plaza hotel when he suddenly leaned against the wall and stopped, showing visible signs of pain on his face.
The Davao City mayor was with his running mate Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, and they were supposed to lay out health programs plans in front of a group of doctors once Duterte will be elected as president.
The presidential candidate’s group immediately assisted and brought him to a nearby room.
An article by Nestor Corrales for Inquirer published on February 11 said that Senator Cayetano went to meet the reporters confirming that Duterte had a migraine and needed to take a rest.
“So, I took over muna sa pagsalita ni mayor kasi medyo masama ’yung migraine,” Cayetano said.
[“So, I took over on mayor’s speech as his migraine gets worse.”]
“The mayor is here, he’s okay. Yun lang talaga, yung medyo nag-catch up yung maraming araw ng puyat at nagka-migraine (It’s just the many days of lack of sleep accumulated causing the migraine). So nothing to worry about,” Cayetano said.
Reports said that the mayor took a nap but his doctors later told him to take a complete rest. Cayetano assured that there’s no need to worry about Duterte’s health, and reiterate that the migraine was just triggered by fatigue and lack of sleep.
“We will completely be open but now it’s really just migraine,” Cayetano said when a reporter asked if Duterte could endure the 90-day campaign period.
Meawhile, Duterte’s chief of staff, Bong Go, noted that the mayor’s bout of migraine is not new, as revealed by Doris Bigornia in her article for ABS-CBN News published on February 11.
Go also shared that Duterte also experienced migraine last Tuesday, however, he still insisted on attending the proclamation rally of the Duterte-Cayetano tandem in Manila.
“Isa pa naming similarity ni Mayor Duterte yung sakit namin, pareho kaming nagsu-suffer ng bad migraine. Hindi ito madalas. Pero pag nangyari ay sobrang sakit at ang ilaw nakakaapekto talaga,” said Cayetano.
[“One more similarity that I and Mayor Duterte have is our condition, we both suffer from bad migraine. It is not frequent, but when it happens, it is too painful and lights really have an effect to the attack.”]
