When Jordan Duncan was stopped by the police one night, he immediately thought "Uh-oh, I hope I didn’t do anything." Little did he know that he did do something and it would change his life.
According to InsideEdition.com, it was Corporal Kirk Keffer of the Benicia Police Department who asked the young teen to stop because it seemed suspicious that he would be walking in the dark where there were no sidewalks. When asked why he was walking at that late hour, Duncan responded by saying he was walking home from work.
It turned out that Duncan's car was broken and he had to walk to and from work for 5 hours. He was saving up for a new car but he was also paying for his own tuition and helping out his parents. He said that he didn't mind the walk anyway, “It’s a pretty peaceful walk. I just put in my headphones, play my music.”
Keffer was impressed by the young man. “People use [a long commute] as an obstacle not to work,” Keffer said. “I wanted to make sure that he understood a good work ethic and dedication like that is going to be noticed and rewarded.”
Keffer dropped off Duncan at home and immediately went back to his department to ask his superiors if there was anything they could do for the hardworking teen. The police department collected enough money to give Duncan a new bicycle which would cut his commute down to 50 minutes. But that's not all. They also set up a GoFundMe account for Duncan, which raised over $ 42,000. It was enough to buy him a new car, pay for some of his school requirements and help his family.
To Keffer, Duncan only had this to say: “He helped me make my commute easier … he helped make my life a lot easier.”
