According to an article by the Philippine Star from March 2016, based on a study conducted by the Center for Women's Resources, "every 53 minutes, a woman or a child is raped".
The article added that the number of rape victims is rising as time passes. Last year, the Center for Women's Resources estimated that rape cases increased by 92% in the country. This is based on research from 2010 to 2014 wherein there were 5132 recorded cases in 2010 and 9,875 in 2014.
The numbers and studies mentioned here are not meant to scare women. They are meant to inform and to remind them that there are various options out there to protect themselves. At least, this is what this article aims to do.
Just in time for International Women's day 2017, we give you a list of 9 gadgets that can be used to protect yourselves against rape.
1. The Angel Wing
The Angel wing is a cute key chain that doubles as an anti-rape device. The smaller wing attached to the chain can be pulled in times of danger. Once you pull it, the gadget will emit a sound that goes up to 90db. Perfect to let most people within a good distance hear your call for help.
2. Guardian Angel necklace
This necklace may look like a typical silver accessory, but upon closer inspection, you'll see that the pendant actually has a small button on it. The device can be synced to your phone and when you press the button, it sends a fake call to your phone. This is ideal for the more manageable situations that give you enough time to get out like meeting a sketchy Tinder date for example. Also, if you press the button three times, it sends an SOS message (with your exact location) to your chosen emergency contact.
3. Anti-rape Buckle
The anti-rape buckle was invented by a group of teenage students from Sweden. It was designed to let only the wearer know how to take it off. It uses a kind of complicated buckle that only the wearer will be able to figure out. The idea here is to discourage the rapist given that it would take too much time to figure out how the buckle works. As of this writing, only 300 units of this product have been sold in Sweden.
4. AR Wear
According to sources, the AR wear is the modern alternative to the chastity belt. It's a kind of underwear that is made of a fabric that is impossible to cut or stretch. It can only be removed by working a small dial attached to it that only the wearer has access to.
5. Hairy legs stockings
This one is probably the weirdest in the list. The name of the product is self-explanatory. And our guess is that this would really work well for women who are not conscious about people staring at their "hairy" legs.
Hey, if it means you're safe, why the heck not?
6. Anti-rape Lingerie or the Society Harnessing Equipment (SHE)
This one was developed by an aeronautical engineering student named Manisha Mohan. Mohan worked on this project with two other students after hearing about the case of a 23-year-old woman who was violently gang-raped in India in 2012.
It is an electric bra that can give out 3800kv of electricity to anyone who tries to rape the wearer. It is also equipped with a GPS tracker that can send a signal to parents or authorities.
7. The Rape Axe (or the 'barbed condom')
This idea was developed by a female inventor from South Africa. It's a female condom that has hooks inside.
In the event that the perpetrator manages to force his way into the victim's vagina, the condom attaches itself to his penis and will cause him unimaginable pain. Also, once the condom attaches itself to the rapist's penis, the only way to take it off would be to have a doctor remove it, thus it serves as evidence against the perpetrator.
However, as of this writing, the gadget is still stuck in the concept stage, meaning more research has to be done to produce it.
Ira Sherman's Anti-rape Impenetrable Devices:
The artist, Ira Sherman designed the following (almost futuristic-looking) anti-rape devices:
8. “The Snare”
This device will probably feel as painful as it sounds. It was basically designed to mutilate the perpetrator's penis if he ever tries to rape the wearer.
9. “The Injector”
This harness is equipped with two syringes; one to splatter ink on the perpetrator and one to inject him with a kind of sedative. This will make it easy for authorities to spot the would-be rapist.
Bonus: The Good ol' Taser
Or the Conducted Electrical Weapon. This is not exactly a device that is devoted to helping women prevent rape, but we just thought we ought to add this to the list.
It's portable and it can be found in malls (just go to a self-defense store/booth). They come in different sizes and designs too (we saw a hello kitty one and another that looks like a smartphone).
It can also be just as effective as some of the gadgets on this list, just make sure you practice handling it.
We hope the list we gave you was helpful. However, we would also like to remind readers that there would be no need for these gadgets if people actually made an effort to learn to respect boundaries.
Happy International Women's Day!
