The Chinese investors are planning a 6,000-hectare tea plantation and they are eyeing for Mindanao as their prospective location.
Interior Secretary Ismael Sueno of the Department of Interior and Local Government got word from the investors that the Chinese agricultural officials told him they want to build it specifically in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) in his statement on November 7.
“They want to get on with the production of the tea, and they have found a right place in the Philippines. You know where that place is? That’s in Mindanao,” Sueno said.
Due to China’s contaminated soil, they taught it is not best to put the tea plantation in mind to this kind of environment.
The site they are aiming at is a controlled territory of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). Sueno explained that he will set a meeting with the leaders of the MILF to lay out the plan of the Chinese officials together with the chairman of the Bank of China.
“I will go to the (MILF) commanders, to the governor, and the mayors in the area and talk to them in order to protect them. This will be a world-class tea plantation. One kilo will cost about $ 10,000,” he said.
The Chinese officials mentioned to Sueno that the investment attempt is to also secure help for the people of Mindanao.
“Sabi nila na bahala na [They said they don’t care even] if they lose 1 billion yuan basta [as long as] they have attempted to help the people in Mindanao,” Sueno added.
