Many were taken aback when President Duterte announced that PHL would be cutting alliance with its long-time friend, United States and would pursue a relationship with China and Russia instead. Although he already cleared that there will be a continued relationship with the global superpower, many politicians were skeptical of the president’s preference of building a stronger alliance with China and Russia. Some outspoken ones reasoned out that these countries are communists and the source of illegal drugs which can endanger the Philippines‘ international reputation.
However, DLSU Political Science Professor, Antonio Contreras, slammed these comments and posted a rather controversial status on his Facebook saying:
“Utang na loob matagal na pong hindi komunista ang China. Maging ang Russia. Ibinaon na po ang Cold War. Tapos na po ang panahon ng Huk. Maging ang ibang mga kaliwa dito sa atin galit na rin at may pagdududa na sa tunay na pakay ng China.
Kapitalista na pong maituturing ang China. Nagpapautang na rin ito ng may tubo (na ugali ng isang kapitalista).
Kaya tigilan na yang kaiisip na dahil pinapalakas ng ating Pangulo ang ating pakikipag-ugnayan sa China ay magiging komunista na tayo. Lipas na pong kaisipan ito. Laos na.
