With the worsening traffic in Metro Manila traffic and other places in the country, Department of Transportation Secretary Art Tugade has recently submitted a 64-page document to Sen. Grace Poe, committee head for public services, which aims to provide special powers to President Duterte to combat such problems.
The government has alloted P1 Trillion Pesos to construct 14 railway projects in different parts of the country, mostly in Luzon. Socioeconomic Secretary Eernesto M. Pernia confirmed that the administration has committed to 'redouble' the improvement on infrastracture to better sustain economic development.
Some of the major railways to be constructed are the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 1 Extension to Cavite and capacity expansion at the Metro Rail Transit Line 3. Although these projects have been bid out during the former administration under Aquino, no implementation has yet been seen.
Included in the P1-Trillion Budget a 14-kilometer subway line to connect the major business districts in Metro Manila which is likely to be finished just in time before Duterte steps out of office. This is one of the major projects out of the 14 railways costing around P219 billion.
11 of the projects are to be constructed in Luzon, and the others will be in Visayas and Mindanao.
