The P191.3 million bridge named "Aluling Bridge" in Ilocos Sur is made to link Mountain Province to Ilocos Sur which is conceptualized in 1978.
According to the July 22 State of the Nation Address by our former President Aquino, the "longest bridge" will inaugurate the viaduct that will facilitate business in the Ilocos Region and the Cordillera Administrative Region.
This 180-meter bridge that took 35 years to make is a way to cut the one hour travel from Cervantes, Ilocos Sur to Tandian, Mountain Province by half in order to avoid the crossing of Abra River, which could be very fatal on rainy seasons.
Based on reports from the Department of Public Works and Highways, the bridge was finished on March 25 2013. After nearly 35 years and six administrations, the Aluling Bridge was completed.
The danger faced by residents along the Abra River is now gone upon the completion of the bridge. Even tourists, will surely be encouraged to go to Cervantes' tourist spots such as Gambang Falls and the Yamashita Cave.
Aluling Bridge will strengthen tradings of farm, fish, and quarry for the residents in towns of Ilocos Sur and provinces of La Union, Benguet and Mountain Province.
Even so, oppositions from Alfredo Cesar Command (ACC-NPA-Ilocos Sur) criticized the Aquino administration's "matuwid na daan" being related to the Aluling Bridge- "an illusion of progress that is being used to cloak the bigger and deeper roots of the people's poverty. Aquino has no intentions of rectifying the sins of the past, and is in fact perpetuating them" according to a progressive report.
