From the same creator that brought us the “RIP Taylor Swift” mural earlier in July, street artist Lushlux’s painting is at the center yet again of another controversy online.
The Australian painter made a mural that shows US Democratic Party presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in a barely-there, American flag swimsuit with cash stuffed in its pockets, which officials in Melbourne, Australia weren’t a big fan of.
The local Maribyrnong Council found the graphic depiction offensive and asked the owner of the wall to remove it, as per an article published by Toronto Sun.
“We believe it is offensive because of the depiction of a near naked woman, not on the basis of disrespect to Hillary Clinton,” the city council said.
In response to the complaint, Lushlux posted a video on his Instagram to show him “covering up” the offensive near-naked mural of Clinton, by painting over a niqab, a cloth worn by Muslim women that covers the face with the written caption: “If this Muslim woman offends u, u r a bigot, racist, sexist, Islamophobe.”
“This is no longer a wall of a supposed ‘offensive and near naked’ Hillary Clinton, it is now a depiction of a beautiful Muslim woman. No reasonable person would consider this offensive. If you do consider it offensive you are a sexist, racist, Islamophobic, xenophobic, uncultured and ignorant bigot.,” he said in his Instagram post.
However, on August 3, Wednesday, the wall had been painted completely black by the council, a move that Lushlux said was “pathetic,” with the artist questioning the policies of free speech and censorship in Australia.
