The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is expected to announce a new discovery tomorrow at 6pm BST.
The new discovery is believed to be about a newly found planet that is “Earth–like” and have the capacity to support and sustain alien-life and to make it more unbelievable, it orbits the star closest to Earth among almost a hundred billion stars that exists in our universe.
The “Earth-like” planet allegedly orbits Proxima Centauri, the star closest to our Sun.
The said planet is believed to orbit the star at a “habitable” zone which more likely proves the possibility of sustaining life.
ESO Spokesman Richard Hook admitted that he was well aware of reports in regards the said planet however he did not confirm nor deny speculations. Although the discovery was set to be unveiled before this month ends.
“We are not making any comment,” he said however just recently they have announced that a press conference will be held tomorrow although whatever the subject would be have not been clarified.
“The still nameless planet is believed to be Earth-like and orbits at a distance to Proxima Centauri that could allow it to have liquid water on its surface – an important requirement for the emergence of life,” a statement from a magazine, although the sources weren’t clarified.
“Never before have scientists discovered a second Earth that is so close by,” it added.
“The discovery of possible planet around Proxima Centauri is very exciting,” says Professor Phillip Lubin of University of California, Santa Barbara.
“It makes the case of visiting nearby stellar systems even more compelling, though we know there are many exoplanets around other nearby stars and it is very likely that the Alpha Centauri system will also have planets.”
