As the remake of the iconic 80s film Ghostbusters is set to hit theaters, its all-female cast respond to criticisms and are set to prove that they can equally be as good as busting ghosts as their all-male predecessors.
When the first trailer for the new movie featuring comediennes Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones first came out, it garnered more than 900,000 dislikes and became the most disliked movie trailer on YouTube.
Jones admitted that when she first saw the negative response of fans, she needed her fellow cast members to calm her down.
“I did not respond well. I might have tweeted out my address to a couple of people to come see me,” she told Reuters.
It appeared that the decision to replace the original team of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson with an all-female cast in the remake incensed a significant portion of the audience.
However, McCarthy shrugged off the criticisms, and used the movie chemistry of the original team from the 80s as inspiration.
“I wanted to bring from the spirit of the old ones that even if you don’t believe in us, we’re going to do the right thing anyways. I think that’s why I love them so much, they’re still saving everybody even though people aren’t rooting for them,” she said.
Defending his cast members, director Paul Fieg notes that it is high time for actresses to get as large of a platform as the movie to showcase the best of their talents.
“There’s nothing worse than trying to slam a woman into a part that was written for a man. It’s just time for women to get to establish themselves in these big leading roles that are three-dimensional, that have foibles and they have vulnerability in a way that women aren’t sometimes allowed to be shown,” he said.
Ghostbusters is set for its premiere in the United States on July 15.
