PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania – With the overwhelming popularity of social networking sites, choosing a profile picture must be the one of the most thought part of using it.
Zahra Mulroy mentioned in her article for Mirror CO UK published on May 25 that there are more than 1.65 billion active users on Facebook, and the majority will have a profile picture that is actually them.
With this number, the trend of social networking are leading in a way users are taking a “less is more” stance on their profiles, removing the long quotes and a detailed “about me” section and rather let the profile pictures speak for them.
An article by Leah Melby Clinton for Glamour said that a team of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania analyzed 66,000 Twitter users’ tweets, as well as surveying a further 434 in order to classify which type of personality traits that exist on users.
The findings of the survey as well as their Tweets were all cross-referenced with users’ profile pictures to get a clearer picture of their natures.
Researchers said that users with a smiling face as profile pictures are very conscientious and are aware of what are expected in various situations, while people with profile picture which has other people in it are most likely extrovert, and was also found to go with pictures that showed youth or being young.
Users which uses other picture and not a face are said to be open to new things and experiences. The researchers said those people ignore traditional shot, and most of the time were nonconformist.
If the profile picture feels a little cluttered, users are believed to be relaxed, cheerful, and not likely to sweat the little stuff, while those having a bright but little blurry pictures are said to be a go-with-the-flow kind of person who wants everyone to get along.
Those having dark, simple and “shows your face very close up” are said to be in the neurotic personality column, and are prone to anxiety and jealousy or get easily frustrated.
