NPC forms coalition with PDP-Laban, allies itself with incoming Duterte administration

The Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), the second largest political party in the Philippines, officially declared its alliance with the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), in support of the administration of incoming president Rodrigo Duterte.

Duterte is currently the Chairman of PDP-Laban. Meanwhile, the NPC had previously backed the candidacy of Independent presidential candidate Grace Poe in the previous election.

With this new partnership, NPC pledged its support to Duterte ally and Davao del Norte Representative Pantaleon Alvarez, who is vying to become the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the incoming 17th Congress.

NPC officials represented by chairman emeritus Faustino Dy Jr., president Giorgidi Aggabao and secretary-general Mark Mendoza, signed the agreement with PDP-Laban officials represented by party president and Senator Aquilino Pimentel III, secretary-general Alvarez, and vice-chairman Alfonso Cusi.

“This agreement binds NPC not only to support Duterte and Alvarez but it binds as well the entire apparatus to support their programs,” explained incumbent Deputy Speaker and Isabela Rep. Aggabao of NPC to ABS-CBN News.

With the agreement in place, Pimentel, who is PDP-Laban’s sole member in the Senate, hopes that NPC and its new allies would help the party’s push for federalism.

“Let us give the idea a chance, the all-out search for peace in our lands, the all-out war against crime, drugs and corruption, the expansion of the middle-class tax reform, the focus on the daily concerns of the common man, and of course this concept of inclusive growth, where we make the benefits of the growing economy felt up to the lowest levels of society. We are hoping the NPC could start studying and adjusting their perspective on federalism. Maybe you did not consider this before. Let’s give this a chance,” he told the Inquirer.

So far, PDP-Laban has already reached across the aisle to form a coalition with other parties such as the Nacionalista Party (NP), Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD), and members of the party-list bloc.
