- Twitter users criticize presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte over rape joke
- Duterte joked about the rape case of an Australian lay minister
- He says the woman’s so beautiful and the mayor should have been the first
Twitter users criticized presidential candidate Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte over what they call an “insensitive comment”; as most of them stress that rape is not something to joke and laugh about.
“Nirape nila lahat ng mga babae so ‘yung unang assault… ang isa doon yung lay minister na Australyana… ‘Pag labas, e ‘di binalot. Tiningnan ko yung mukha, ‘ta***na parang artista sa America na maganda. Put***ina, sayang ito. Ang nagpasok sa isip ko, nirape nila, pinagpilahan nila doon. Nagalit ako kasi nirape, oo isa rin ‘yun . Pero napakaganda, dapat ang mayor muna ang mauna. Sayang [They raped all the women during the first assault… one of them is an Australian lay minister…. When the bodies were taken out, they weren’t wrapped. I looked at her face, she looks like a beautiful American actress. What a waste! What came to mind was, they raped her, they lined up. I was angry because she was raped, that’s one thing. But she was so beautiful, the mayor should have been first. What a waste]!” Duterte said as seen in a video clip that has been circulating online.
Duterte was referring to an incident at the Davao City Jail during his first term as mayor.
According to an August 1989 report by the Chicago Tribune, which was cited by CNN in an article, inmates took 15 church workers hostage after grabbing their guards’ weapons. One of the church workers that was taken hostage was the aforementioned Australian woman lay minister.
On Twitter, a lot of social media users tweeted about Duterte’s supposed joke.
“Mayor Duterte, you don’t say something like that about rape and pass it off as another joke,” said @HecklerForever.
“Duterte went too far with his “joke”… How dare he say those words to a rape victim! How insensitive!” wrote @eunirodillo.
“I played Duterte’s rape joke on the air. Played it several times. My way of saying he’s not the right man,” @_ulan_ stated.
“Ang sarap sa [It was a nice] feeling mag-unfriend ng [to unfriend] people who still think rape is a joke and Duterte is a messiah,” expressed @pooprica.
“Anticipate the possibility of receiving threats after calling Duterte out for his rape joke,” tweeted @Watdahel_Marcel.
“How can you even stomach voting for Duterte after that rape joke? I think I’ve completely lost respect for the man. And I’m from Davao,” @blueBearries said.
