- Roxas blasts Duterte for his chumminess with the CPP-NPA
- He says a real president upholds the law, does not aid terrorists who kill soldiers and police
- He also warns the public Duterte will support and coddle communists under his presidency
MANILA, Philippines – Hitting Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte on his open friendliness with members of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and its armed wing the New People’s Army (NPA), Liberal Party standard bearer Mar Roxas said a real president should not be supporting terrorists and lawless groups who extort from innocent civilians and kill the country’s security forces.
“What can we say about a commander-in-chief who coddles and supports our foes in the NPA? These NPA members, who kill our police and soldiers?” the Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted him as saying. “The president’s job is to uphold the laws of our country, not to approve these illegal activities which go against all the principles of our country.”
Roxas also frowned on Duterte’s past statements urging civilians to just pay the NPA revolutionary taxes; saying the communist insurgents’ acts should not be tolerated by anyone.
“The NPA is our enemy. They kill our police and our soldiers. They occupy what is not theirs, they collect taxes from farmers and indigenous peoples. They are an enemy to our progress,” he said.
Duterte has openly described himself as a socialist; saying he empathizes with the plight of the poor and agrees with the position of the Left.
At the same time, he disagrees with the leftists’ armed struggle; saying they should pursue reform through peaceful means.
He also promised them positions in the government once he becomes president on the condition they lay down their arms.
