Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesman Chief Superintendent Wilben Mayor said four police generals in active service were asked by PNP Chief Ricardo Marquez to explain their meeting with persons closely identified with Liberal Party standard bearer Mar Roxas at a hotel located in Araneta Center.
Mayor said they will get the side of the four officials.
“Our office will officially communicate with the concerned officers to have them answer the issues. We will give you updates once we receive their respective reply,” PNP Spokesperson Chief Supt. Wilben Mayor told reporters.
The four PNP officials, who were in civilian clothes, were seen with retired PNP deputy director general Marcelo Garbo Jr. at the Gourmet Bar of the Novotel by journalists from Metro Manila, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao who were on the same hotel for a seminar organized by the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility.
The four officials were Director Generoso Cerbo Jr., chief of the PNP Directorate for Intelligence; Chief Superintendent Ronald Santos, deputy regional director for administration in Calabarzon; Chief Superintendent Rainier Idio, regional director of the Cagayan Valley police and Chief Superintendent Bernardo Diaz; who heads the Western Visayas regional police office.
Julie M. Aurelio of Philippine Daily Inquirer shared in her article dated April 4, 2016 that the four generals are members of Philippine Military Academy “Maharlika” Class of 1984, which had adopted Roxas as an honorary member.
After meeting with the four generals, Garbo was later seen by journalists exiting a function room where a confidential LP meeting was being held. A male TV reporter said he also saw Thea Reyes, a member of Mar Roxas’ staff, inside the room.
In a later interview, Cerbo admitted meeting with Garbo, but said the meeting was personal.
“That was a personal breakfast meeting with Garbo in the lobby of Novotel Manila. No staff of Roxas was with us. There was no political agenda during that meeting,” Cerbo said.
