- A picture of the four Malaysians held hostage by the Abu Sayyaf was posted on Facebook
- The Facebook page believed to be set up by the Abu Sayyaf was under the name of “Victor Troy Poz”
- The Facebook page has since been taken down
A picture of the four Malaysian crew members of the hijacked Malaysian tugboat M/V Masfive 6 who were kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf Group was posted on Facebook.
In the photo, the hostages, identified as Wong Teck Kang, 31; Wong Hung Sing, 34; Wong Teck Chii, 29, and Johnny Lau Jung Hien, 21, were shown in a squatting position with one of them holding up a piece of paper with the name “Victor Troy” and date “April 8, 2016 written on it.
The image was posted on the Facebook page of a certain “Victor Troy Poz” on April 10 (a quick check found that the particular Facebook page has since been taken down).
The Facebook page is believed to have been recently set up by the Abu Sayyaf and that the name “Victor Troy Poz” was most likely fictitious. It appeared to be the group’s way of trying to establish contact with the families of the four hostages.
The Malaysian Digest said that on April 13, the mother of the youngest Malaysian hostage revealed to media that one of the captives, Wong Teck Kang, was able to contact his father.
She said Teck Kang’s call to his father gives fresh hopes that the four are still alive.
Teck Kang reportedly told his father that they are safe for the moment, but their whereabouts was not revealed.
“We shall leave the matter to the police and the Malaysian Government to work with the authorities in the Philippines to protect the four and bring them home safely. We can only pray and hope now,” Lau’s mother expressed her desire to cling to the only shred of hope offered so far.
