- Two motorists lost their lives in a massive car pile-up in China
- At least 30 other people were injured
- Two trucks, three buses and at least 20 cars were involved in the road accident
Two people have died and many others were injured when vehicles crashed into each other in eastern China on Saturday, April 2.
The massive car pile-up took place at the Changzhou section of a highway linking Shanghai and Nanjing in east China’s Jiangsu Province.
A traffic police officer assigned at the scene of the road accident told Xinhua News, China’s official press agency, that rescuers are still trying to determine the exact number of people injured in the smash-up. At least two trucks, three buses and more than 20 cars were involved.
The officer said the victims were rushed to different hospitals in the cities of Changzhou and Wuxi.
A video footage from the scene of the multiple car crash showed some stranded motorists atop their badly damaged cars gazing at a sea of crumpled vehicles as if assessing the full enormity of the accident.
Investigators suspect the stormy weather made the road slippery, causing vehicles to skid and crash into each other.
Vehicular traffic was heavy that day as it was the first day of the three-day national holiday marking the Ching Ming Festival or Tomb-sweeping Day, a traditional Chinese festival on the first day of the fifth solar term of the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar.
Road workers and rescuers took several hours clearing the pile-up before traffic on the busy highway was resumed.
