- Manny Pacquiao’s brother lost a balikbayan box at NAIA
- Roel Pacquiao, Manny’s younger brother, said the box contained expensive items
- A review of CCTV footage revealed that another person picked up Roel’s box
A brother of Manny Pacquiao lost a balikbayan box after arriving at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport terminal 1 (NAIA-1) last Thursday, April 14.
Roel Pacquiao arrived at the airport at 5 p.m. from Los Angeles on board Philippine Airlines Flight number PR 103 as part of Saranggani Representative-turned-senatorial candidate Manny Pacquiao’s entourage.
The younger Pacquiao said the LBC balikbayan box contains expensive items such as iPhones, assorted electronic gadgets, watches, rubber shoes and cameras.
Rudy Santos wrote in his Philstar article dated April 16, 2016 that after failing to find his balikbayan box from the conveyor, Roel immediately sought the assistance of Bureau of Customs personnel and aviation police.
Rico Alex of the police Aviation Security Group and Roel reviewed the closed-circuit television footage at conveyor number 3 at the arrival baggage claim area to see who picked up his box.
During the review of the footage, a person was seen picking up Roel’s balikbayan box at the conveyor. It was, however, difficult to identify the person as the CCTV footage was blurred, prompting an airport official who requested anonymity to comment that the airport’s CCTV cameras needed upgrading.
The official added that officials of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) failed to buy new CCTVs. They instead bought body-scanning machines worth P140 million, but the equipment has not been used.
Pacquiao’s balikbayan box may have been mistakenly picked up by another passenger, airport officials said.
“There are many boxes that look the same. We hope that the passenger who took the box will contact the airline personnel,” one of the officials said.
