- Dubai plans to build a new skyscraper, taller than the 829.8-meter Burj Khalifa
- The new tower will be decorated with rotating balconies and elevated landscaping inspired by the mythical hanging gardens of Babylon
- Mohamed Alabbar, chairman of Dubai-based Emaar Properties, which is the company behind the project, said the tower will cost around $ 1 billion (P46.1 billion)
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Burj Khalifa, which is the tallest artificial structure in the world standing at 829.8 meters (2,722 feet), will soon be overshadowed as Dubai plans to build a new taller skyscraper.
The Guardian mentioned in an article published on April 10 that the developer of the world’s tallest building plans to build an even taller tower decorated with rotating balconies and elevated landscaping inspired by the mythical hanging gardens of Babylon.
Mohamed Alabbar, chairman of Dubai-based Emaar Properties, which is the company behind the project, shared that the viewing tower would cost about $ 1 billion (P46.1 billion).
Alabbar said that the final height of the new building will be announced upon completion, even adding that his company would like to present the tower as a “gift to the city before 2020.”
The mentioned year, 2020, is the year Dubai will host the world Expo trade fair.
An article by Gulf News published on April 10 said that Spanish-Swiss architect Santiago Calatrava Valls will design the tower, and will have observation decks and 18 to 20 mixed-use floors that will host restaurants and a boutique hotel.
Alabbar said the new structure will be an “elegant monument” that would add value to a property being developed by the company along the city’s creek.
“Many would like ‘to have a view’ when considering buying a property,” Alabbar said.
The chairman said the tower will be slender, evoking the image of a minaret, and will be anchored to the ground with sturdy cables.
Recently, Saudi Arabia’s Kingdom Holding is reportedly building a tower in Jeddah that is projected to surpass Burj Khalifa, rising more than 1km (3,300ft) into the sky.
The present tallest building, Burj Khalifa, is at 828 meters (2,700ft) and cost $ 1.5 billion (P69.1 billion).
