- The DOLE and the POEA issued a warning against fake job advertisements posted online
- The agencies identified an advertisement that claims to come from “Marriot Hotel Canada” as a hoax
- The POEA said that legitimate companies do not ask for payments in order to be considered for employment
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) have issued a warning to Filipinos seeking job opportunities abroad to be careful in dealing with recruitment advertisements posted online; saying that some job postings seem to be legitimate even though they are actually not.
In an article written by Nelson Badilla for Manila Times, it was disclosed that a certain advertisement that claims to come from a company named “Marriot Hotel Canada” is circulating on Facebook, but POEA Administrator Hans Leo Cacdac said the recruitment posting is merely a scam.
In a statement, DOLE Sec. Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz said that online users should be careful not to believe in such employment scams that use the names of popular companies to victimize people.
“We were informed that in addition to the previous modus operandi of these unscrupulous scammers, which include sending e-mails to unsuspecting job seekers, they are now prowling for victims in social media. I advise our job seekers to be extra cautious, and apply only at recruitment agencies licensed by POEA, and deal with licensed agencies with legal job orders,” Baldoz said.
The POEA also noted that job seekers can look for certain signs that would determine if the advertisements posted on the internet are true.
“Scammers request applicants to send application, resume and other documents to a fraudulent e-mail address. Companies do not use free e-mail service providers such as yahoo.com, gmail.com, hotmail.com, live.com, etc. Then, the swindlers ask victims to transfer money directly to a bank account or through a money remittance company as payment for processing, immigration, and visa fees,” Cacdac said; adding that legitimate companies do not ask for payments to be considered for employment.
