MANILA, Philippines – Continuing his sortie in Mindanao, a barnstorming Vice President Jejomar Binay told Islamic leaders not to vote Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte for president because he is not a “decisive and compassionate” leader who can finally bring peace to Mindanao.
“We Muslims and Christians have the moral responsibility not to vote for Duterte,” the Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted him as saying.
“We really want to preserve the life of the Filipinos, specifically the Muslims through peaceful way of shaping life, not the peaceful way of killing life,” he added, in apparent reference to Duterte’s reputation as an alleged executioner.
On the other hand, Binay said he will definitely place peace in Mindanao as one of his top priorities.
“That is part of my priority agenda that we will continue talking and work for lasting peace here in this part of Mindanao,” he said. “We will always pursue peace. I will talk with anybody and continue negotiations. The BBL, the effort put into it won’t go to waste because despite not having been passed, it will be included in the working paper in our talks.”
Heeding Binay’s call, some 50 Islamic leaders as well as the 1000-strong Zamboanga City-based Sabiel Almuhtadeen Foundation pledged to support his cause.
“He can help solve the Mindanao agenda for lasting peace and he can erase the issue of discrimination and injustices against Muslims in the southern Philippines,” Sahie Udjah, the foundation’s secretary general said.
“And we know that with his administration, and backed up by his senators-to-be, that the Muslim agenda in Senate or in the House of Representatives will be addressed politically, administratively and religiously so that peace in Mindanao will be in the hands of the Filipinos.”
