- Apple collects about $ 40 million gold from old and discarded Mac products
- This is part of the 61 million-pound of materials Apple has collected in the year 2015
- Some reports say the gold may have come from chipboards and Apple Watch
Amid global warming and climate change, Apple has done its part to curb the possible causes of these two phenomena by recycling the materials of its old and discarded products.
The tech giant released a report on Thursday about its materials recovery efforts for the past year, 2015. The report revealed that Apple was able to collect 89 million pounds of “e-waste from landfills.”
But you know what they say’ there is treasure from trash. So as Apple did its part for the environment, it was also able to collect as much as $ 40 million worth of gold from old products such as iPhones and iMac.
The report said Apple recovered as much as 61 million pounds of materials such as steel, aluminum and glass – that includes over 2,000 pounds of gold.
Business Insider (BI) cited activist group Fairphone and said on the average, a smartphone has 30 milligrams of gold found in “circuit boards and other internal components.”
“And Apple recycles millions of iPhones and other computers that have tiny bits of gold in them,” the BI story said.
It also surmised that the gold came from Apple Watches that is made up of more than 50 grams of 18k gold.
