MANILA, Philippines – Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle urged the Filipinos to participate in the annual “Earth Hour”.
The activity is organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature and began on March 31, 2007, in Sydney, Australia, wherein more than 2.2 million individuals and 2,000 businesses turned their lights out for one hour in the first “Earth Hour” event.
It is a worldwide grassroots movement which aims to encourage an interconnected global community to share the opportunities and challenges of creating a sustainable world.
This year’s “Earth Hour” will be on Saturday, March 19 from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm and will entail participants to turn off non-essential lights to shine a light on climate action.
According to an article on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines’ (CBCP) website, Cardinal Tagle said: “Let’s turn off our appliances and other things that use electricity to give our world a little rest.”
Echoing Pope Francis’ call for “ecological justice”, Cardinal Tagle said people should show that they care for the environment and help reduce the impacts of climate change.
According to WWF-Philippines website, “Earth Hour Philippines” capitalizes on the Filipino attitude of ‘bayanihan‘ or fellowship.
