- A woman pulls her son’s tongue and intestines in an exorcism attempt
- She says she should not be blamed as she only followed her church’s teachings
- She claims her son was suffering from untreatable fever and had malformed genitals, which she believes are symptoms of a demonic possession
A woman was arrested for brutally killing her six-month-old baby during an exorcism attempt in Kangurue, Nairobi, Kenya on Thursday, February 25.
The woman, Irene Mbithe, ripped out her son’s tongue and intestines in a violent exorcism ritual after she became convinced that he was possessed by demons.
A Wix News article dated February 26, 2016 said Mbithe’s neighbors, who claimed they heard her screaming, praying feverishly and imploring the demons to leave her baby during the late hours of the night, alerted the police and Mbithe’s aunt, Catherine Muthama.
Muthama, who arrived first and saw the gruesome scene, told K24 TV: “When I arrived I was surprised to see the mother had pulled the tongue out of the baby and I screamed at her asking why she had killed him.”
Mbithe said she meant her son no harm and should not be blamed for what happened. She tried to explain her actions by saying she only followed the teachings of her church, a Machackos-based cult, where she was excommunicated prior to the incident.
“God punish me if I have done anything wrong to my son who I love so much and have prayed for years to conceive and give birth to,” she said.
Mbithe said her son was suffering from constant fever that was untreatable and that the boy’s genitals were deformed and appeared to be growing in an unusual manner. She said these are symptoms of a demonic possession.
The Police took Mbithe to Kayole police station for questioning, while the baby boy’s body was taken to a mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
