- ‘Budol-budol’ scammers strike on two separate occasions, divest their victims of valuables
- Victims said they only met the perpetrators on Facebook, thought they were gentlemanly
- Authorities warn everyone to be more careful especially with people they meet online
MANILA, Philippines – They just didn’t break their hearts, they also robbed them blind.
Now, authorities are warning the public to be more careful in their dealings with people they barely know after two women were victimized by ‘budol-budol’ scammers they’ve met on Facebook.
In the first case, the victim narrated how she and the man were on a date at a restaurant after meeting for the first time in Baclaran Church.
The woman said the man told her to go up ahead to the second floor as he will be the one to order food. As soon as she went up however, the man promptly went out of the restaurant carrying her bag.
In the second incident which also happened in the same area, the woman— who was looking for a job — said she was made to inquire inside a motel by the perpetrator.
While they were strolling towards the motel, the man convinced her to let him carry her bag as there were many pickpockets around.
As with the first case, the man hurried off with the victim’s bag while she was still inside the motel.
Both incidents were recorded by CCTVs.
According to Brgy. 146 chairman Antonio Reyes, both victims admitted they only met the scammers for the first time after communicating with them on Facebook. They also said they didn’t know their real names.
Reyes warned the public to be more careful especially since Valentine’s Day is approaching.
“Lalo na yung February 14, siyempre, araw ng puso. Alam mo na yung ganyang modus, pupunta, makikipagkita sa inyo sa simbahan, kunyari banal, ‘yun pala may balak,” he told GMA News.
[Especially on February 14, Valentine’s Day. This modus usually happens inside the church, suspects pretending to be kind, but are actually planning on something bad.]
