A ranking Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighter (B.I.F.F.) official was nabbed and his son killed during a joint police and military operation in Cotabato on Tuesday night, February 9.
Hassan Indal, alias Abu Hazam, was arrested at his house in Barangay Kalanganan, Cotabato City by virtue of a warrant of arrest issued by the Regional Trial Court Judge George Jabido for murder and double frustrated murder cases pending against him.
Capt. Joann Petinglay, head of the 6th Infantry Division public affairs office, said Indal is the vice chairman for internal affairs and the commander of the 4th division of the B.I.F.F.
Tagged as the number 4 in the B.I.F.F. hierarchy, Indal has been involved in various criminal activities and atrocities in Central Mindanao since the inception of the group in 2010.
Arianne Apatan wrote in an article for ABS-CBN published on February 10, 2016 that the B.I.F.F. official’s son, Ali Indal, who acted as his escort, was killed during the operation after he put up a resistance and fired at the police and military personnel.
Military officials believe Indal was in Cotabato to avoid the ongoing clash between the government forces and B.I.F.F. fighters in Datu Salibu, Maguindanao. The skirmishes started five days ago, but military troops are still conducting clearing operations.
The raiding team seized from Indal’s house a M653 rifle, chamber-loaded and with short magazine with 10 live bullets, a caliber .45 chamber-loaded and with two magazines with 14 live bullets, and a fragmentation grenade.
Indal is currently being held at the holding facility of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (CIDG-ARMM).
Major General Edmundo Pangilinan, the Philippine Army’s 6th Infantry Division commander, commended a tipster for providing the information that led to the arrest of Indal.
