- Senator’s son finally speaks up on photograph showing him wearing limited edition Nike shoes
- He explains he only spent P10,000 on the shoes using his own money
- He also apologizes, says he didn’t mean to offend anyone with his post
MANILA, Philippines – Amid the storm of criticism his shoes have wrought, Sen. Grace Poe’s son Brian Llamanzares finally aired his side and said the Limited Edition Nike Air Mag “Back to the Future” shoes he bought online did not cost hundreds of thousands of pesos as earlier speculated.
“The shoes did not cost as much as the rumors claim it to be. I bought it online at P10,000 from my own savings. It did not come from government funds as I am a private citizen and not working as a public official,” he told Rappler. “I used my own hard earned money. I hope that these rumors and lies are finally put to rest.”
Llamanzares also apologized if he had offended anyone for displaying the shoes.
“I apologize if anyone was offended by my shoes, it was never my intention to upset anyone. I just wanted to buy something for myself after saving up for months,” the 23-year-old said. “I don’t know much about shoes and I’m not exactly a sneaker expert so when I saw these online at P10,000 and I liked the design, I saved up and bought the shoes.”
A proprietor of a sneaker store in Manila earlier said Llamanzares’ shoes were just cheap imitations and sold for around $ 100 dollars on eBay.
However, some shoe aficionados are maintaining Llamanzares’ shoes cost more than he claims due to it having to pass through a bidding process.
Poe, who is running for president, also would not divulge the real cost of the shoes after her son told her but nevertheless expressed shock at the price. At the same time, she defended her son and said he is a private citizen who uses his own money to buy his things.
