- Police arrest a Pinay who allegedly gave birth and left her baby inside restaurant toilet
- She was identified as Mary Grace Trinidad
- The baby was admitted to a neonatal ICU
A Filipina identified as Mary Grace Trinidad was believed to have given birth at the toilet inside the Subway sandwich restaurant in West Covina, California on Monday morning, February 15.
According to an article published by KTLA 5, one of the customers noticed that the Filipina was bloody when she left the toilet, so she called one of the employees. They found an umbilical cord leading into the toilet.
West Covina Police Department Cpl. Rudy Lopez told the members of the media that the newborn, a full term baby boy was found crying, upright and half-submerged in the toilet water.
Lopez continued that the newborn’s placenta was found in the trash can.
The employees called 911, and the newborn was rushed to the Queen of the Valley Hospital and admitted in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
According to an article published by CBS Los Angeles, the suspected mother, Mary Grace Trinidad, 38, left a trail of blood, which the police used to track her down.
She was found in an alleyway behind a nearby Pep Boy store and was arrested by the police.
As a precaution, Trinidad was also brought to the Queen of the Valley Hospital.
Filipinos in the area claim that the woman is a familiar face to them; disclosing that Trinidad has been sleeping, using the restrooms in the restaurants and begging in the area.
ABS-CBN News quoted a certain Lydia Olaivar as saying: “Only yesterday she was there in front of the restaurant, probably in labor na siya [since] yesterday.”
Trinidad faces charges of attempted murder and child abandonment. Bail will be set at $ 2 million.
Police records also reveal that she has a criminal history and is currently wanted on a $ 30,000 warrant for drug charges.
In an article released by USA Today, it was disclosed that a booking photo and surveillance video of the woman are being released in order to bring more awareness to the Safe Surrender Baby Law, as stated by the police. Such a law allows mothers to turn their new born babies over to fire stations or hospitals – no questions asked.
