- Around P30-million to P35-million will be spent for this year’s People Power commemorative activities
- One of the highlights of the event is the ‘Experiential Museum’ which will feature martial law stories
- Activities will start from February 15 until February 26
MANILA, Philippines – Organizers will be spending some P30-million to P35-million for the commemoration of the 30th year anniversary of the EDSA People Power revolt to be held this month; with a good part of it to likely come from the state coffers.
This was revealed by EDSA People Power Commission (EPPC) head Emily Abrera during a press briefing in Malacañang on Tuesday, February 9.
Abrera said fund raising events have been set up to raise the amount which will be used mainly in spreading awareness, especially among younger generations, on the atrocities and many aspects of martial law.
The commission has also reached out to private sectors who are willing to contribute to the fund.
“We are still putting together what is going (to cover) the cost. We think it’s going to be in the area of about P30-P35 million,” Manila Bulletin quoted Abrera as saying.
The amount is roughly half of what was spent during the 25th year anniversary. Also, Abrera said the toned-down celebration last year was, in fact, in preparation for an all-out event this year.
One of the highlights in this year’s celebration is the pop-up ‘Experiential Museum’ created to showcase different stories and lives during the martial law era. It will be open to the public for free on February 25 and 26.
Three lanes along White Planes Avenue will be temporary closed from February 14 to 29 to give way to the construction, operation and dismantling of the structure.
This year’s theme is “Pagbabago: Ipinaglaban N’yo, Itutuloy Ko!”.
Abrera added everyone is invited to the different events, including to the commemorative rites in EDSA, which will start on February 15 until February 26.
She also denied that Senators Juan Ponce Enrile and Gregorio ‘Gringo’ Honasan, two key players in the historic EDSA revolt who are now staunch critics of the Aquino administration, are barred from attending the celebration.
