- Binay sign erected on picturesque rice terraces by man who claims to be a supporter
- He says he does not personally know Binay, insists it’s legal because it’s on his private property
- UNA party denies any hand in the signage, says Binay’s political rivals could be behind stunt
MANILA, Philippines – Apart from the “Welcome To Binay Country” tarpaulin at the recently concluded International Eucharistic Congress (IEC) in Cebu, another signage is gaining mileage and drawing flak for being set up in one of the country’s national heritage sites — the Banaue Rice Terraces.
Located on top of the picturesque rice terraces in Brgy. Bocos, the sign made out of stitched-up sacks and which spelled the word “Binay” was set up by 66-year-old Henry Lumabong who claimed he supports the Vice President.
Amid the uproar over the sign, Lumabong said no one can make him take it down since he erected it on his property.
“I erected it to show that I am a supporter of Binay,” he told ABS-CBN. “This is my land, it’s private property.”
When asked why he’s rooting for the Vice President, Lumabong said he is banking on Binay’s promise to replicate his successful programs in Makati for Ifugao province and the rest of the country.
Reacting to the dissatisfaction from locals and tourists who are not happy with the sign photobombing the iconic rice terraces, United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) secretary general JV Bautista denied their party had a hand in it. He also accused Binay’s opponents of being the real perpetrators behind the stunt to make him look bad.
“I have not seen ‘yung sinasabi mo na nakalagay. Pero what logic would Binay or any of his supporters have to put something like that as prominent?” he said. “Kaya to us, it’s just simply illogical that sign will come from us. Why? Why should we do that? There is absolutely no rhyme or reason to do it.”
