The 65th Miss Universe held in the Philippines was much-anticipated by the Filipinos since it was the third time that the country hosted the most prestigious beauty pageant in the world. It also signified the end of the reign of Pia Wurtzbach, the 2015 Miss Universe title holder.
Miss France, Iris Mittenaere, emerged as the victor of the beauty pageant. She was followed by first runner-up Miss Haiti (Raquel Pelissier) and second runner-up Miss Columbia (Andrea Tovar). 13 candidates were chosen after the first round of elimination, and then it went down to 9 until only 6 candidates remained.
For the final round, only 3 candidates were chosen, including Miss France. Philippines' representative Maxine Medina was able to reach the Top 6 of the pageant but was unable to advance to the Top 3.
According to USA Today, Iris is a 24-year-old Parisian native studying dental surgery. She aims to use her Miss Universe crown to advocate for dental and oral hygiene.
She praised her country's open borders and refugee population in the Question & Answer portion of Miss Universe 2015, saying "In France, we want to have the most globalization that we can, we want to have the biggest exchange of people that we can."
