The May 2016 election is one of the most dramatic ones we had in years. But one has obviously and significantly stood out. With over 16 Million votes, the Filipino people decided that it wants Rodrigo Roa Duterte to embody the change they have long been waiting for.
But what if Rodrigo Roa Duterte didn't win as a President? Well, here are the 3 significant scenarios.
1) Davao City will not have been bombed.
If he lost in the presidential race, he would have stayed as Mayor of the city for the 24th time. He would have ensured the safety of his Davaoeños instead of having to call that all-out war against the Abu Sayyaf. But as he may have kept Davao safe from this bombing had, the Philippines would still be far from the peace we all have been dreaming of.
2) 1,700 people may have been alive until now
1,700 people died as a result of alleged extrajudicial killings. More than 600 of these deaths were those who refused to surrender to the police. The remaining the others are found in the street, packed in garbage bag with signs "Pusher ako". These are suspected as vigilante killings, and anyone can be a victim. But as they may have been alive by now, if Duterte didn't emerge as the 16th President, we still live in a fabricated peace, concealing the root cause of crimes which is illegal drugs.
3) We would have a good relationship with United Nations
If not for all his threatening statements to the UN officials, we would have retained the strong ties we had with the UN. However, if Duterte didn't create the friction, we may have become further dependent on them.
You see, this is neither an anti-Duterte or pro-Duterte post. Politics is never black and white. Often, we try to destroy each other by picking a side and sticking into it. We've got to open our minds and see everything in many perspectives. A true critical citizen would call out the negative and would laud the positive. Only through this will the Philippines be able to achieve change. It lies on every one of us to voice out our principles, but we also need to also listen to the other sides. We at TNP, ensures to share the burden with you, to suffer with you, and in the long run, celebrate with you for the betterment of the nation.
