- Bato Dela Rosa dismissed criticism PNP’s war against drugs targeting small-time pushers only
- He admitted it won’t be easy to net the big fish, said critics should wait and be patient though
- He also encouraged the big-time drug lords not to surrender so they can just be hunted down
MANILA, Philippines – With more bodies piling up amid the crackdown on illegal drugs, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa dismissed criticism only small-time drug pushers are being targeted.
In an interview with Rappler, Dela Rosa admitted that the campaign has so far only netted those below the hierarchy of the illegal drug trade because the big fish are harder to catch.
“I accept that criticism. Even in the comments, I see that. Those who die are the small-time people,” he said.
However, Dela Rosa told critics to be patient because the time of reckoning is also coming for the big-time drug lords and their protectors.
“Mayors who are drug lords won’t die easily. Or governors involved in illegal drugs. They don’t die easily. So just be patient. There will come a time when their foolishness will go back to their body,” he said.
At the same time, the PNP chief encouraged drug lords to keep fighting so they could be hunted down. He said it was useless for these people to surrender since they would just return to their old ways once they are let off the hook.
:That’s better because if they just surrender, sooner or later they’ll go back to their old ways. They’re rich. They’ll just surrender for convenience,” he said. “They’ll only say they’ll surrender because the police are hunting them down. Then after that, they’ll be free to continue their drug business. So continue, don’t back down from being a drug lord.”
