Malacañang Palace on Saturday, June 11, expressed its gratitude to Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar, for giving clemency to 15 jailed overseas Filipino workers, in light of the holy month of Ramadan.
GMA News Online said the granting of clemency was announced on June 7.
“Nagpapasalamat tayo sa Emir of Qatar, si Shiekh al-Thani sa paggawad ng kapatawaran o clemency sa 15 Pilipino sa panahon ng Ramadan,” Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Hermino “Sonny” Coloma said over the state-run radio dzRB.

Coloma added that the granting of clemency to the OFWs is a manifestation of the good ties between the Philippines and Qatar.
A report transmitted by the Philippine Embassy in Doha, Qatar to the Department of Foreign Affairs said that it is facilitating the immediate repatriation of the 15 expatriates in coordination with the Search and Follow-up Department under the Qatar Ministry of Interior.
The pardoned OFWs were those who have served a substantial portion of their sentences.
Qatar usually grants pardon two times a year – during the holy month of Ramadan and the Qatari National Day observed every December. The granting of pardons during Ramadan is practiced across the Gulf and is usually made around the time or during Eid’l Fitr; the celebration of the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
