Angel Colon, one of the survivors of the deadly Orlando attack was shot three times. He played dead as gunman, Omar Mateen, continuously fired at people who were on the floor.
Colon told members of the media that Mateen continued to fire his gun at people in the club who already appeared dead on the floor. He was shot in the leg, his hand, and his hip. He remembered thinking he will die next as Mateen shot a fire near his head. A girl lying next to Colon was shot dead.
“This person had to be heartless, ruthless,” he said. “I don’t know how he could do something like this,” Colon said as he recalled how Mateen calmly shot person after person in different rooms of the club.
Based on the BBC report from the hospital staff, six injured people remain in critical condition after the attack on the Pulse Nightclub. Dr. Michael Cheatham, a trauma surgeon, said he “would not be surprised” if the death toll, which is currently at 49, increased. According to him, the gunshot wounds of some of those who died, were shot to the head.
A hospital employee told BBC that other doctors were moved to tears when they saw the extent of the injuries.
Mateen, before he was killed by police officers who responded to the scene, pledged allegiance to the militant group, the Islamic State.
Some witness statements reveal that Mateen had visited the nightclub over the past three years. He also used a homosexual dating app to interact with the other club goers.
The New York Daily News got a statement from a performer at Pulse, Chris Callen, saying that Mateen has already been in the club several times prior to the shooting.
In addition, Kevin West, told the Washington Post that he had known of Mateen via the dating app called “Jack’d” and recognized him as he visited Pulse in the early hours of Sunday.
“I remember details. I never forget a face.” West said.
BBC said investigations are ongoing and Mateen’s wife, Noor Zahi Salman, is being questioned as well. She reportedly accompanied him to survey the club prior to the attack and even helped him get his weapons.
However, according to reports that NBC and ABC News released, she said she tried to talk her husband out of pushing through with the attack.
