At least three people died in an accident that occurred off the coast of the town of Gumaca in Quezon province on Friday afternoon after a merchant boat named M/B Lady Aime sank in the waters of Barangay Villabota.
In an article written by Gemi Formaran for Journal Online on February 27, it was disclosed that strong waves have damaged the front part of the craft owned by a certain Ronnie Flores, which was then carrying 63 passengers bound for the Quezon Pier.
Members of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council, Philippine Coast Guard, Gumaca Municipal Police Station, Bureau of Fire Protection, and the Philippine Army’s 4th Maneuver Platoon have joined in the efforts to rescue those who are on board; which included boat captain Jun Navares and three other crew members.
According to Police Inspector Rodel Anda, deputy chief of police of Gumaca, Quezon, Navares tried to maneuver the boat back to its port of origin after the accident, but the damage has caused the vessel to sink very quickly.
However, the 32-year-old captain was not able to give his official statement about the incident to the authorities since he was nowhere to be found during the course of the investigation.
The fatalities were identified as Kalibo-resident Susan Tajara, 53; Quezon-resident Isabelita Olivers, 52; and public school teacher Rosefel Pulumbarit, 46.
