Professional basketball player Arwind Santos currently reaps what he had previously sown – training hard to become the best baller in the San Miguel Beer team – with fame, awards and material possessions. Despite his accolades, the six-time champion of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) hasn’t forgotten his humble roots.
While he loves to drive around his 2014 Ford Mustang GT, Arwind knows that everything is just temporary. After all, he used to pedal around his pedicab back in Lubao, Pampanga, before his basketball career took off.
Speaking to sports website SPIN.ph after intense practice, Arwind said, “Lahat ng yan, bigay ng Diyos yan. Anytime, pwede yan mawala, kaya yung mga ganyan, dapat you know pa rin yung priority.”
The 36-year-old PBA star spoke from experience when he got involved in a minor scrape while driving the Mustang. However, Arwind shared what it felt like being able to get something as expensive as the sleek sports car.
“Pag nakakakita ng mga ganyang (sasakyan), yung mga nabili mo, nabibigay sa’yo, nakaka-proud and then you feel blessed talaga,” he continued.
“Pero kailangan lang huwag mong dadalhin sa utak mo na kala mo sino ka na, hindi ka na marunong tumingin sa pinanggalingan mo, makakalimot ka na,” the previous league MVP added.
According to the former star of Far Eastern University varsity, the multi-million peso gray car was a wedding gift from ninong Dennis Villa-Ignacio. “Siya yung talagang idol ka na maliban sa buhay-buhay, sa business suggestions, opinion. Malaki utang ng loob ko sa kanya,” he explained.
While he also takes out his other sports car, the neon green Hyundai Veloster, every now and then, Arwind drives the attention-grabbing Mustang during date nights and practice with his wife.
“Kadalasan pag may date kaming mag-asawa, at dito sa practice minsan pagka-ayaw kong mabugbog yung isa ko. Kailangan gamitin mo siya (GT) every week,” said the former PBA MVP.
Besides, the powerful sedan still runs smoothly despite infrequent use.
“Oo naman, lahat naman, basta may gasolina, maganda takbo. Mahirap dyan, ang ganda ng sasakyan mo, walang gasolina, hindi tatakbo yan,” he quipped.
Notwithstanding his successful basketball career, Arwind Santos knows how to look back at where he came from.
“Yan ay isang pagsubok na – tandaan mo, kahit sobrang taas mo na, kailangan yung paa mo, nakasayad pa rin lupa. Marunong ka pa rin kung saan ka nanggaling,” he said as a reminder to himself and to others.
