The most prestigious beauty pageant was held in the Philippines for the third time, with former Miss Universe title holders Sushmita Sen and Dayanara Torres as part of the panel of judges.
Maxine Medina, the Philippine candidate, was heavily scrutinized by fellow Filipinos and one of the issues which hounded the model was that she refused to have a translator for the Question and Answer portion of the 65th Miss Universe.
Former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz has recommended an interpreter for Maxine, with Pia Wurtzbach also echoing Gloria's sentiments. Gloria stated in an interview that if Maxine is more comfortable using Filipino, then she can answer in Filipino, provided she has an interpreter.
On the other hand, GMA actress and 'It' girl Solenn Heusaff tweeted that the translator for Miss France made a mistake, saying that the Miss Universe's answer should have been "1st year of medicine school" and not "when I missed my first casting."
Solenn is a French-born Filipina whose father is Louis Paul Heusaff, a former French Marine of Breton descent. She studied fashion design, along with basic beauty/fashion make-up, body painting, and prosthetics in Paris for three years and six months.
