The Supreme Court’s decision to allow the burial of the late dictator and former-President Ferdinand Marcos caused public uproar across the country, making the division between the pro and anti-Marcos sides apparent. Social media was flooded with differing opinions regarding the issue.
Google seemingly took sides regarding the controversy, as it edited the Libingan ng mga Bayani’s map’s name to Libingan ng mga Bayani at Isang Magnanakaw. The edit happened around 10 AM this morning, November 9, 2016.
The map maker showed the name change was requested by a user going by the handle “Anonymous 0463”. It also showed that the “feature has undergone [a] total [of] 54 changes” which includes Military Cemetery and Libingan ng mga Bayani at Isang Kawatan, among others.
Malacañang urged everyone to change it back to its original name.
Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar stated:
“Baguhin natin ulit. Ibalik natin sa original. Kung meron mang nakikinig ngayon at nagbabasa at meron kayong oras na baguhin iyon, baka pwede ibalik sa dati… I’m sure nang-aasar lang din ang naglagay noon eh,”
“Go forth and multiply. Well, it’s a democracy. It’s part of the vibrancy of this democracy. And Google is not a government entity so is Wikipedia, and they can do anything they want in social space,” he added.
