The surprise burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani yesterday, November 18, around 12 noon, sparked protests among the Anti-Marcos, Martial Law victims, and students. Around 2,500 from Ateneo, Miriam and UP filled Katipunan Avenue to express their disagreement and frustration.
Many noted personalities also expressed their disappointment publicly. But perhaps everyone had been waiting for the reactions of the Aquinos, the long-time rival of the Marcoses, whose patriarch played a significant role in paving the way for the EDSA revolution to happen.
Former President Noynoy Aquino released his statement in an interview saying: “Through the decades, I have been very clear as to what I thought of Mr. Marcos’ misrule. I believe now I should listen and give way to our people’s voices,”
He also noted how we should all listen to the voice of the people and how we should all go back to the stories of the people who experienced Martial Law firsthand.
Meanwhile, Kris Aquino took her statement to Instagram and posted a picture saying: “Often the most powerful statement is your dignified silence.”
Amid all these, President Rodrigo Duterte remains tough on his stance that the burial is for national healing.
