Recently, President Rodrigo Duterte made headline in the International headlines once again after allegedly badmouthed and insulted US President Barrack Obama. This led to the cancellation of their supposed meeting which was probably Obama's last visit with ASEAN leaders before he steps out of the position as President.
But what did Duterte said that has directly insulted the US President? A certain netizen named Ethel Cantor Constantino who used to work in the top 2 biggest media companies, ABS-CBN and GMA, reacted to the literal meaning of what President Duterte said. She pointed out that the problem was in the translation as it was not Obama who Duterte was insulting.
“He was only addressing the Filipinos who are subservient to the USA. Obama was named because a Reuter reporter asked President Duterte if Obama will ask the question,” said Constantino. She also quoted the President and posted the part where it became controversial.
"“I am a Pres. of a sovereign state and we have long ceased to be a colony. I do not have any master except the Filipino people. Nobody, but nobody. You must be respectful. Do not just throw away question and statements. P*****g ina- mumurahin talaga kita diyan sa forum.”
She pointed how the last sentence is what made it controversial. The translation was "son of a w***e, I will curse you in that forum.” She said that there's a big difference in the context of how it was translated and shared: “What a big difference there is! If they could not translate and understand tagalog, these international News organization should hire someone credible to do that for them,”
She cleared that the expletive was meant to highlight Duterte's point of how the Philippines refuses to be slave of a foreign country and was very passionate in delivering the message.
