In sickness and in health - couples made vows to be together no matter what the circumstances are.
New Orleans Pelican’s guard, Jrue Holiday fulfilled his vow to his wife. After finding out that her wife, Lauren who was a former U.S. women’s soccer star, has brain tumor, Holiday told the NBA that he needs to take care of his wife and has to leave.
Lauren is also 8 months pregnant and its will be their first child. Despite Holiday's decision, the NBA supported his decision and even wished his wife quick recovery.
They both got married last 2013 in a very charming ceremony.
Jrue and Lauren's love story started when they are still attending UCLA. A young girl approached Jrue and asked him if he was Darren Collinson. Lauren was just sitting behind him while Jrue was explaining who he was. Lauren then said that he was way cuter than Darren.
They were seeing other people at that time but they began dating when Jrue was drafted in Philadelphia 76ers in 2009.
After the USA beat Japan in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Lauren retired as a midfielder. In less than 6 months, she was pregnant with their first child.
The New Pelicans announced last September 4, 2016 that Jrue was leaving the team because of her wife’s condition.
The Pelican's coach Alvin Gentry said, “We are all praying for a healthy delivery of their first child and a successful surgery for Lauren."
Pelicans General Manager Dell Demps said in a prepared statement provided by the club, "Furthermore, we ask everyone to respect the Holiday’s privacy time.”
“The most important thing for Jru to do right now is be with his wife and family.”
“Every one of our coaches and players understands what Lauren and Jrue are going through, and they know we’re behind them 100 percent.”
Jrue said in Nola.com that, “My family comes before basketball.”
After six weeks after which she will give birth to the baby, Lauren will undergo surgery. However, her labor might be early. They are keeping their privacy this time and their focus is only on their baby and Lauren’s health.
