During momentous occasions, leftists and activists have always made sure that they get part of the spotlight. But, the usual scene for them was, police authorities will drive them away or sometimes, even use harsh methods to prevent them from moving forward.
But last Inauguration Ceremony was a different story for them. The militant groups rallying were picked up by the Presidential Security Group (PSG), not in any way drive them away or send them to jail, but to actually have a dialogue with the new President Rodrigo Duterte himself. This has been a shock for everyone.
Furthermore, they were entertained during the time slot allotted for the Cabinet’s first official meeting as inaugurated officials. This has shown Duterte’s desire for genuine change as he was willing to listen to the tirades of the rallying groups. It can be recalled that Duterte even invited some of the militant leaders to be part of his cabinet.
Some of those who were part of the dialogue were Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) Secretary Renato Reyes, Karapatan Secretary General Cristina Palabay, Kilosang Mayo Uno (KMU) chairman Elmer “Bong” Labog, Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas secretary general Antonio Flores, Kabataan Representative Sarah Elago, former Gabriela congresswoman Liza Maza, Anakpawis Representative Ariel Casilao, and Labor Undersecretary Joel Maglunsod. The meeting was held inside the Osmeña Room inside Malacañang Palace.
The President assured them that he will respect freedom of expression and allowed them to even hold their rally for the first ever State of the Nation Address (SONA) close to the venue. On the other hand, aside from being able to present their 15-point “People’s Agenda“, they were also able to ask questions to the President. They even had a picture taken with Duterte’s campaign sign, ‘the clenched fist’.
The leftist group is hoping that this is a good start for their harmonious collaboration with the government.
