- Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) chief aired her support for police campaign vs. illegal drugs
- She said death toll for drug suspects negligible, added cops should be allowed to do their jobs
- She also said she believes PNP chief’s claim that drug lords, not police, are the ones killing drug suspects
MANILA, Philippines – Coming to the defense of the Philippine National Police (PNP) amid the rising cases of drug-related killings, Public Attorney Office (PAO) chief Persida Rueda-Acosta said the number of deaths is actually negligible compared to the total number of drug suspects who have surrendered so far.
“The number of those who surrendered since yesterday is 63,000. Then those who were killed are more than 100. If you compare them, it’s almost negligible, that’s my point,” she told GMA News.
Based on the number, Acosta said she is inclined to believe that those who died really fought back against the arresting officers.
“If you blame the deaths on the policemen, that would be unfair because those who surrendered were not killed by the police. They’re still alive,” she said.
Acosta also called on critics not to prevent the police from doing their jobs.
“Our police force, of whom there are many good policemen, are convincing drug pushers to surrender. Let’s not discourage the police from doing their jobs,” she said.
Acosta added she also believes PNP chief Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa’s claim that it was actually drug lords— not the police— who are killing off the drug suspects so as to cover their trail.
“It looks like General Bato’s intelligence that those who have killed the suspects are syndicates who don’t want to be identified,” she said. “The syndicates are moving to limit the number of people who can reveal them.”
