Rehabilitation for drug dependents may soon become reasonable and affordable once proposed Senate Bill No. 8 will become a law.
As proposed by Sen. Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, the bill sought to make the cost of drug rehabilitation affordable for drug-dependent beneficiaries of Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) who will submit themselves for treatment at an accredited health care provider, an article written by John Ted Cordero which was published on GMA News Online disclosed.
“One of the pervading social ills at present is the rampant drug addiction. Various laws have been passed to prevent and control this drug menace. What has been overlooked, however, and has not been properly addressed is the rehabilitation of drug dependents,” Sen. Sotto’s statement noted.
As such, the bill also seeks to amend the RA 7875 or National Health Insurance Act for the purpose.
Likewise, the measure calls for accreditation of rehabilitation centers so that PhilHealth members could avail of these services.
According to Sotto, the bill will serve beneficial with the recent influx of drug users surrendering to the government as he added that the bill will properly address the drug addiction problem in the country.
In addition, the senator pointed out that the government should provide facilities and medical treatment to ensure the complete recovery and social reintegration of drug users.
Sotto stressed that most of the times, rehabilitation costs tend to discourage families to seek treatment for drug dependents.
Based on report, the cost of drug rehabilitation ranges from P30,000 a month or higher depending on the type of rehabilitation a patient may require.
Sotto disclosed in his statement that “out of 1.7 million drug dependents, only 2,000 underwent treatment and rehabilitation based on a 2009 survey.”
