- VP Leni Robredo shot down conspiracy theories about her late husband’s death
- She said she is sure Jesse’s death was an accident
- There were theories that circulated on social media that Jesse Robredo’s death was premeditated
Vice President Leni Robredo believes there was no foul play in the death of her husband; the late Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo. She said she’s sure Jesse’s death was an accident.
“Sigurado ako na ‘yong nangyari sa asawa ko, aksidente [I’m sure what happened to my husband was an accident],” Robredo said during a press conference at the Office of the Vice President in Quezon City on Thursday, July 14.
The late Interior Secretary died on a plane crash in August 2012. There were theories circulating on social media that his death was premeditated after he allegedly uncovered the connection of drug lords he was investigating to at least two Philippine National Police generals, including Chief Superintendent Joel Pagdilao, one of the five PNP generals tagged by President Rodrigo Duterte as drug syndicate protectors. As Jesse supposedly dug deeper, he allegedly discovered that the drug lords also have links to some Palace officials.
Days after Jesse Robredo’s death, it was reported in various news sites that then DILG undersecretary Ronnie Puno, along with Senior Supt. Joel Pagdilao and Supt. Oliver Tanseco, stormed into the condominium unit of the Robredos to allegedly try to retrieve classified documents that Jesse kept.
As mentioned in Julliane Love de Jesus’ article for Inquirer, VP Leni Robredo said she knew that her husband was investigating issues, but did not know if those involved Pagdilao.
“Alam ko na may mga iniimbestiga siyang mga issues, pero hindi ko alam kung kabahagi doon si General Pagdilao. Hindi ko rin alam kung kasama siya do’n sa mga nag-attempt na pumasok sa condominium unit namin the day after the crash,” she told reporters.
[I knew that he was investigating some issues, but I don’t know if General Pagdilao was part of it. I also do not know if he was one of those who attempted to enter our condominium unit the day after the crash]
VP Robredo said she turned all the documents that Jesse kept over to the Department of Justice. She admitted that she no longer followed up on the matter. She said her focus then was to recover the body of her husband, make sure their daughters are alright and to keep her sanity.
