Senator Ralph Recto wants to include provisions in the 2017 National Budget that would fund the purchase of firearms for more than 16,000 “gunless” policemen.
Recto said that the 2017 National Budget, which will be the first to be passed under the Duterte administration, should be aimed at improving the government’s ongoing law and order campaign that “will not just focus on illegal drugs but on other crimes as well.”
The Senator cited a Commission on Audit (COA) report on the Philippine National Police (PNP) which said that there are currently 16,140 cops who have not yet been issued their service pistol. He also noted that at least 623 police officers were using “donated” guns while an additional 3,654 policemen had not been accounted for ever been issued their service pistol.
“The PNP has not attained a 100 percent issuance of short firearm to PNP uniformed personnel required,” the COA report said, according to the statement issued by Senator Recto.
In addition, increased funding for the PNP could also be used to fill in an additional 23,820 positions that are still currently vacant in the police force.
This would translate to 12 additional policemen for each of the nation’s 1,489 and 45 more for every one of the country’s 145 cities.
